Did you know that natural clay can be used to create a beautiful, breathable, and ecological surface material that lives and ages together with your house? This course offers you the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of clay plastering in the historic surroundings of Fiskars Village.
The course takes place at the Fiskars Circular House – an experimental environment for building techniques and materials currently under development, where Aalto University’s Wood Construction Experimental House (relocated from Otaniemi) and a straw bale garage are also located.
During the course, you will work on a real building site and learn through hands-on practice combined with a short theoretical introduction:
– The key properties of clay
– How to test and utilize local clay
– How to prepare base clay plaster from clay powder, with or without different fibre additions
– Necessary preparation work for different surfaces
– Plastering techniques and tools
In this course, we focus especially on top coat plaster. However, you will also receive instructions for mixing base coats as well as tips for their application. If you would like to explore the possibilities of clay in greater depth, you are warmly welcome to attend both courses.
The course is led by Johanna Hyrkäs: architect, professional clay builder, and researcher in clay construction at Aalto University.
Address: Isokiskontie 16, 10470 Fiskars
