Wilderness cabin Kurukuru, Wood Program 2025–2026, Aalto University

The wilderness cabin Kurukuru is intended to be placed in the midst of nature near a hotel, allowing guests to enjoy both the tranquility of nature and the services of the hotel. Kurukuru” refers to the movement of wind swirling around a tree, and the spaces of the building also spiral around a fireplace. The area of the wilderness cabin is 9 m² and it is designed for two people for a short stay.

The building, assembled from wooden elements, is a reinterpretation of traditional log construction. The elements are made from different types of wood materials, such as sawn timber, veneer, glued laminated timber, wood fiber insulation, and building papers. Two people can carry and assemble the prefabricated parts manually without a crane. The parts of the building are designed to be dismantled and reused. In addition to its small area, Kurukuru has a small carbon footprint.
